(#112) Remote Research Opportunity on Cardiovascular Research
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of global mortality and a major contributor of reduced quality of life. For driven high school/undergraduate students, SkoolMentor is offering a unique 8 week opportunity to conduct remote research in cardiovascular research with a postdoctoral research scientist affiliated with University of Bristol, UK. The Mentor has extensive research experience in vascular biology (formation of new blood vessels in our body) and proteomics research (study of cellular and secreted proteins).
Endothelial cells form the innermost lining of our blood vessels and their dysfunction contributes to many CVDs. Early atherosclerosis, for example, is characterized by a change endothelial permeability, thereby worsening the barrier between blood and the vessel wall. We will utilize published as well as unpublished data from a novel lab model to analyze the change in proteins secreted by endothelial cells into the blood or vessel wall. We will see how statins (cholesterol lowering drugs) alter endothelial barrier. Students will develop insights into large data analysis with broad applications. Novel markers of CVD risk could be unearthed in this process. An understanding of blood vessel development, polarity, lumen formation etc would be developed by the end of the project.
The researcher has served as a mentor for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The mentor can provide excellent guidance for students to create a poster to be presented at prestigious scientific conferences/science fairs. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are curious, driven, want to contribute to cardiovascular research and wish to learn cutting-edge web-based and open source tools in medical research.
