(#505) Grey Biotechnology and Environment

For driven high school students, SkoolMentor is offering a unique 8 week opportunity to conduct remote research in environment science with a research scientist affiliated with a startup biotech company. The Mentor has experience in biotechnology, environment pollution related issues and bioremediation approaches.

The topics of research could be: exploring various bioremediation strategies for industrial/municipal wastage, oil spill sites, pesticide affected sites, genetic engineering to expediate pollutant degradation, plastic eating bacteria, heavy metal deposition in soil and water bodies. Students will develop basic understanding of how microorganisms develop resistance in a polluted area, or how heavy metal deposition affects flora and fauna of that particular area and how grey biotechnology can be useful eco-friendly bio-remedial approach.

The researcher has served as a mentor for high school students and research students. The mentor can assist students to create a poster/presentation to be presented at science fairs and scientific conferences.

This is an excellent opportunity for students who are curious, driven, want to contribute to environment pollution related issues.

Opportunities such as these are also a great way for students to showcase the passion for STEM and stand out in college applications.

The mentoring happens once a week for 8 weeks and is for 1 hour duration.

The students need to put in about 3-4 hours per week on their own doing the research.

No pre-requisites though, basic understanding of core sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics will be an added advantage.
