(#409) Computational Biology

(#409) Computational Biology

For driven high school/undergraduate students, SkoolMentor is offering a unique 8 week opportunity to conduct remote research in computational biology with a Postdoctoral researcher affiliated with a fundamental biology research centre. The Mentor has extensive research experience in structural biology, genomics, big data analysis and Transitional research.

The topics of research could be learning to design vaccines for pathogens like SARS Cov-2 and antimicrobial resistance prediction from genomes. Students will develop an understanding of viral genomics, vaccine targets and design strategies and mechanisms of antibiotic/drug resistance. At the end of the program, they will be comfortable with aspects of biological data science like retrieving data from databases and analysis to glean functional insights. The Mentor is also open to ideas from students in the field of computational biology and bioinformatics.

Through these projects students will be exposed to Transitional research for healthcare where a combined knowledge of biology, genomics, chemistry, data and computer science would be utilized to gain insights and develop solutions to biological problems.

The researcher has served as a mentor for college students. The mentor can assist students to create a poster/presentation to be presented at science fairs and scientific conferences. The Mentor can also provide letters of recommendation for graduate school or college admissions and help in publishing manuscripts in repositories.

This is an excellent opportunity for students who are curious, driven, want to learn about the tools and databases used in biology and contribute to Transitional research. Opportunities such as these are also a great way for students to showcase the passion for STEM and stand out in college applications.

The mentoring happens once a week for 8 weeks and is for 1 hour duration.

The students need to put in about 5-6 hours per week on their own doing the research.

Some basic background in viral or bacterial genomics is desirable but not necessary.
